Columbus Day is coming up! Do you have any fun plans for the long weekend? This holiday honors the anniversary of Christopher Columbus’ arrival to America on October 12, 1492. A quote often attributed to Mr. Columbus is, “You can never cross the ocean until you have the courage to lose sight of the shore.”

This is a wonderful philosophy both in life and in art. Our greatest successes come when we are willing to be brave and take risks. Until we’re willing to venture into the unknown, we’ll never uncover new ground.

It’s the same with art. Oftentimes, our best creative work starts to unfold once we let go of what the picture is “supposed” to look like. Leave room for discoveries and accidents. After all, Christopher Columbus wasn’t even trying to find America; he was seeking a shorter trade route to India. The surprises are where the magic happens!

So on Columbus Day this year, celebrate by taking a risk, in art or in life! What are you going to try?
