Did you ever catch fireflies in a jar during warm summer nights? The beautiful glowing dots in the dark are a childhood staple of summertime. But if that Nor’easter earlier this week was an indication of anything (can’t NY and NJ catch a break by the way?), it’s that summer is very far away. That doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the gentle glow of this fun evening pastime.

Here’s a project that’s very simple (as seen on From Panka With Love)… and a bit more humane than actually capturing lightning bugs! All you’ll need is a mason jar, some glow-in-the-dark paint, and paintbrushes.

Take your jars and wash them out thoroughly (if there were labels on them, make sure there’s no residue left). Set out your paint colors and paint little dots on the inside of the jars. The more dots you make, the brighter and better it will look! Just let them dry and you’re done! Wait ‘til nightfall and enjoy your very own faux lightning bug jar.

This makes an adorable nightlight, a pretty accent, or the perfect mood lighting for bedtime stories! And best yet—it’s in-season all year round!
