Handmade Hanukkah

It’s tough to keep track of all the wonderful holidays coming up! Thanksgiving is right around the corner, but this year so is Hanukkah. Usually associated with being close to Christmas, the Festival of Lights has snuck up on us due to the variations in the Hebrew calendar. The first night of Hanukkah falls right on Thanksgiving—some have even dubbed the double holiday Thanksgivikkah! Start getting your family in the spirit with this fun handprint menorah craft.

All you’ll need is construction paper or cardstock in whatever color you’d like your background to be, a paintbrush, and blue, yellow, and white paint (or again, whatever colors you’d prefer).

Paint your kiddo’s hands blue, or the color he or she wants the menorah to be. You can also paint the fingers (from the knuckle up) a different color to be the candles. Only paint one thumb, though—or paint both, but they should overlap or come together because the thumb will act as the shamash, the ninth candle in the middle. If you’re doing this project by yourself, we recommend painting one hand at a time and rinsing them off in between.

Have your little crafter firmly press his or her hands down on the cardstock or construction paper. Once the print is done, wash those hands and get ready for the final step! Paint one thumb yellow and press down at the top of each candle to create the flames. Let it dry and display!

Are you preparing for both Thanksgiving and Hanukkah this year? If so, how do you plan to celebrate? Any fun dishes or crafts? In the end, most holidays are really about food, family, and fun—so however and whatever you celebrate is perfect!
