Independence Day Rocks!

The Fourth of July is right around the corner! Do you have any plans yet? Whether you’re heading to the beach, barbequing in the yard, or watching fireworks under the stars, it’s a great day to spend outside (weather permitting).

To start getting in the American spirit, try making painted patriotic rocks. Not only are they fun and easy to create, but they also make perfect blanket, towel, and tablecloth weights. All you’ll really need are rocks, acrylic paint (red, white, and blue), paintbrushes, and some sort of sealant if you want your paint to last.

Start by going on a rock expedition to find the perfect specimens—just big and smooth enough that you can paint a design on. Next, wash or wipe them off a bit so you remove any dirt. Then grab your brushes and paints and start decorating! Remember to work over newspaper or scrap paper. Try stars, stripes, the flag, “USA,” your name, a firework… anything that makes you celebrate! Once the paint is dry, either spray or brush on a sealant to lock in the paint and waterproof them.

Ta-da! Now you’re ready to pack a picnic basket or beach bag and head outside to enjoy the holiday. These little weights aren’t only good for the Fourth of July… use them all summer long for your outdoor adventures. And don’t forget to bring them out when Memorial Day comes along again, too!

What’s your favorite way to spend the Fourth of July?
