Make a Decorative Clay Bowl DIY Kids Craft
A craft for Girl Scouts! Brownie-Craft-Potter Badge! People have been making crafts with clay for thousands of years! With a little creativity, you can teach your Brownies how clay was used to make ancient art and everyday objects. With this 5 step tutorial your Brownies can earn their Potter Badge! Take a fist size lump of clay and roll it into a ball. Make a pintch pot by sticking thumb into the center of the clay and pinch and press your way around to open up the center to make it wider until the edges are approximately ¼” thick. Lightly roll the top rim out so that it is parallel with the table. Make a decorative design along the rim by “fluting” or “crimping” it. To do this, start with one hand on the top of the clay rim, and one hand underneath the rim. Using the index finger of your top hand, push the dough between the thumb and index finger of your bottom hand. This will form a “U” shape (If it makes a “V” shape, that’s okay too!). Continue the same motion around the rim of the bowl, spacing the crimps about an inch apart. Let clay dry for at least 1 week until hard. Paint your bowl with acyllic paints. Try different colors, stripes and patterns. Allow paint to dry before using.
