Milk Carton Cottages

Well, it seems to be that time when the last of the Christmas decorations come down and the trees are discarded. Not so fast! Instead of packing up the holiday decorations, give them new life with this fun milk carton project. Make cozy lit cottages that glow with your Christmas lights!

You’ll need milk cartons, paint, paintbrushes, and an X-Acto knife, and your string lights. Of course, you can grab more supplies to embellish your houses if you like. Markers, colorful paper, stickers, or glitter could all add some extra pizazz. This project is super kid-friendly, but make sure a grownup is around to handle the cutting in later steps.

Rinse your cartons and let them dry. Grab one and start painting. You can make it a solid color, paint a house design, or create a pattern or abstract picture. Another fun idea: use a sponge to apply your paint and create texture. Repeat with each carton.

Once the paint is dry, take your knife and cut out the bottom of each carton, then cut out windows.

Finally, place in your string lights inside and plug in! The warm glow creates a cozy little neighborhood of milk carton cottages and repurposes those Christmas lights with a fresh spin. If you have multi-colored lights or electric candles leftover instead, those will work perfectly as well. And if you just want to create the houses without the lights, you can also skip the final steps of cutting the bottom and windows on the cartons.

This fun and easy craft is perfect for beating the winter blues and it’s environmentally friendly. Not only do you get added use out of your holiday lights, but you also recycle your milk cartons. These make a sweet window decoration or even an adorable night-light!
