Paper Birds

Paper is probably one of the most transformative materials out there, yet it’s a bit of an unsung hero. We probably use paper every single day, but don’t pay much attention to it. One of the great things, however, about being creative and artistic is taking everyday materials and transforming them into something new and unique.

Diana Beltrán Herrera does just that. She is a Colombian artist who creates beautiful three-dimensional model birds out of… paper! Her work is so detailed and precise that they truly seem lifelike.

Each bird is handmade and can take anywhere from five days to two weeks to complete. Species explored range from exotic, like flamingos, cranes, and toucans, to woodland, such as woodpeckers, hummingbirds, and blue jays.

The delicate pieces of paper give the figures such a sense of flight and movement. With a slight bend or curl, each feather seems to come alive. Detail work is added last with paint to finalize the avian creations.

Diana Beltrán Herrera takes a simple material like paper and transforms it into something completely extraordinary. To see more of her stunning work, visit her website.

How would you transform paper? Is there another material you like to repurpose?
