Winter Drawing Prompts

Well, it's safe to say we are definitely in the heart of winter. And this cold spell the East Coast is having certainly proves it! The end of January can be tough because there is nary a sign of spring in sight... winter behind you, more winter ahead. But that's okay! On days like we've had this week, when it's just too cold to go outside anymore than you absolutely have to, take the quiet time to do a little extra scribbling! And if the bleak winter skies aren't providing much inspiration, here are some fun suggestions to get your paints popping and your markers moving!

  1. Draw a decadent, delicious gingerbread house. Or hey, if you're feeling adventurous, make a real one!
  2. Working with shades of white can be a very useful painting exercise. Paint a snowy scene where white dominates almost the entire surface.
  3. If you could take your dream vacation right now, what would it look like? A tropical paradise on a beach?  Skiing in the mountains?
  4. Think warm thoughts by drawing a cozy, lit fireplace. Don't forget to decorate the mantle!
  5. What's your favorite winter activity? Ice-skating? Skiing? Snowball fights? Having hot chocolate inside? Show it.
  6. Come up with your own winter holiday! Draw the traditional foods, decorations, and customs (giving gifts, lighting candles, having parties, etc).
  7. When it's this cold out, the water in a pond will freeze so it's rock solid. Draw what you think is going on below the ice.
  8. Make yourself a valentine! It's important to show yourself some love.
  9. Draw a unique snowman (or snowwoman). Is it abominable? A fashionista? Doing a headstand?
  10. If you had your very own igloo, what would it look like? How would you decorate the inside?

Have a cozy, creative weekend!
