Scribble Inspirations

Andres Amador is a visual artist whose primary canvas currently is the beach.

Andres is an Earthscape Artist and you'll see how that is his calling when you read his Scribble Artist Interview!  Andres offers some great advice on how to get the creativity going.

Substructures. The most refined version. A perfectly executed design and awesome framing by the advancing ocean. Ocean Beach, SF

Jersey Beach Art Festival. Andres working. Photo: Stepane Gimenez PhotographyOften inspiration comes from simply doodling without purpose or goal. A fun activity is to do a couple of doodles and then look over them and see if any of them would be interesting if done in a slightly different way and then try drawings with adjustments of various aspects. I use this technique when working on designs and it helps me create many variations. Each little difference offers a choice that helps me more fully develop and zero in on the design that ultimately gets put on the beach.

If you have access to the beach you can bring a stick and make the doodles really large. I love using my whole body in the making of a piece, its a much different feeling from drawing with pencil on paper. That’s really all there is to it! :-)

The best way to be involved with something I do is to join my facebook fan page: https://www.facebook.com/AndresAmadorArts

Thanks Andres!

My name is Marianne Murphy, I’m 21 years old, I was born in Maryland and attend the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, where I’m studying animation.  One of my favorite creative activities is to take a quick scribble, try to figure out what it looks like, and turn it into a whole work of art. My boyfriend Josh and I have a game where we send each other a few lines on a page, and we each take those lines and create fully colored drawings out of them.  Below are a couple of examples.  Try them out and see how it goes!

This is a great activity to do with Kids of all ages, at home and in the classroom.  Have your kids choose a photo from a magazine and paste it onto paper.  Talk with them about imagination and how it works, also about how pictures, stories and feelings in our bodies help us create.  You never know what lies behind the borders of our imagination.  You'll be amazed what they come up with!

Lewie JPD is a cutting edge visual artist who has lived and worked in Sydney, Tokyo and Los Angeles. His work is a hybrid of imageries - pop, surrealism, collage and comic art - blended together to create zany worlds and characters. His strong use of color and free-styling, casual brush work come together to form eye-catching images that are unique and highly imaginative.

My advice to young creators is to enjoy yourself - and do not judge. If one was to compare the work I was creating when I was in high school to the others in my class - I would probably have ranked somewhere in the middle - my output, while original and heartfelt, was not standout. And yet, here I am, more than thirty years later, a professional artist - living and loving art. So, comparison with others, in art, is meaningless and counterproductive. Just follow your own joy and passion; manifest your own unique vision of life in your very own way - and, most importantly, believe in yourself - and enjoy! There is no limit to what you can do.

With that said- pick up a pencil, a stick, some clay, or whatever you have and just start creating.

Thanks Lewie JPD!

My name is Joel Garten, I am an artist, composer, writer, and entrepenuer.  I have so many different things that I do, and the thing that unites them all is a sense of flow and creative energy.  I use that sense of flow and intuition in everything I create, and try to have a sense of flow in my path through life.

I recommend getting a set of non-toxic oil pastels and a notebook. You can look at my paintings on my website www.joelgarten.com and use them to inspire your child.  When your child finishes a drawing, ask them what they liked and what they didn't like about it.  Then they can go on to the next drawing, and you can ask them the same thing, and so on.  In that way they will develop slowly their own technique and way of painting based on their own likes and dislikes.

Feel free to share your child's great drawing with me.  You can email me a photo of their artwork to joelgarten@gmail.com.

When Andi, aka Chief Scribbler, met Sharron Parker at the recent Architectural Digest Home Design Show in New York City she was amazed at how felt could be manipulated in such amazing ways.  We are lucky to have Sharron be a source of felting inspiration for us Scribblers!

Sharron explains, “Wet felting” is different from “needle felting” where you use barbed needles to tangle fibers – which I do occasionally. I work with dyed, unspun wool or roving since I like to work with color. It's something like “painting” with wool: I comb and layer several background layers, and then arrange the dyed wool wherever I want, often in thin watercolor-like layers. Lines can be created by using wool yarns, and more texture can be achieved by using wool curls, etc. After making a piece of felt, I can stitch more onto the surface, sew pieces together, etc.  To learn more about Sharron's fiber technique you can have a look at http://sharronparker.com/Technique.html

Try both types of felting and "paint with wool" with the Scribble Shop supplies suggested below.  Read more about Sharron Parker in her Scribble Artist Interview, http://www.scribbleblog.com/2013/04/scribble-artist-interview-with-sharron-parker/
